Jane at Jamii

Today I met Jane at Jamii school.  Basilus, one of the Jamii school directors,  tells me her home life is very difficult.  Jane came up to me, looking for a hug, and we became instant friends.  I asked her about home and school and what subject she likes best.  Soon she noticed the bag of pattern blocks I had with me and was anxious to play with them (doesn't everyone travel with math supplies?)

We talked about the shapes, their names, and because Jane is in 4th grade, I quickly moved on to showing Jane how the pattern blocks could be used for fractions.
Within minutes others became curious about my impromptu fraction lesson, including teacher Sophie.  A few more students showed up and pretty soon I had a sea of students surrounding me actively engaged in a fraction lesson with pattern blocks!  They were eating it up!
It is these completely spontaneous moments that become the highlights of my time in Kenya.  Words cannot adequately express my gratitude for the opportunity to be with these amazing children, their curiosity and love of learning, as well as their warmth and friendliness.
Thanks Judy for the great pictures!
